Default The Mario Kart Wii Thread!

Well, I just got the game and have been playing it a bit. I've completed all the 50cc cups now, and am up to the bikes-only 100cc. I haven't touched the online yet, but I'm sure it'll be great. Some observations:

-The Wii Wheel is a love-hate thing. One of my friends who got it before me loves it and prefers it to the normal controls. I have mixed feelings about it personally, as it's quite hard to swerve if you're gonna get hit by something. I prefer the gamecube controller - it seems more precise.

-The new tracks are bigger and longer than the GC ones, and they have a lot more going on. Lots more obstacles on the tracks in the later stages, which makes up for the somewhat widened tracks. There's some very cool ideas for obstacles, such as wobbling floors, ramps to do tricks on, etc. Overall, I prefer these to the GC tracks. The retro tracks are okay, but the GBA ones will bore you - they're very bland. The N64 tracks are nice to see. I'm glad they kept DK Mountain from the GC. It has a few tweaks from last time - there's ramps going down the mountain, and the area with the hairpin bend/chasm has been widened. The bridge is more dangerous now, because it tips if you go near the edge.

-50cc is very, very easy, but doesn't feel it at first. This is due to constant pressure when you're in first place. You rarely get further than 1/3rd of the track ahead of anyone else. I like this change, because it keeps you on your toes, and you can't breeze through the tracks to the point where they bore you.

-The items are as varied as before. The Pow! block causes everyone in front to slip and lose their items, but it appears too often. There's an ink-spraying thing (the name escapes me, but it's from Mario Sunshine and also appears in MKDS as an item. This thing covers part of the screen with ink for a few seconds, and I hate getting it when in first place - it's easy to fall off the edge. There's a mega mushroom which makes you huge and squash people - that's quite fun. The thundercloud is great. It shrinks the person ahead, but they can pass the shrinkage on to another player by touching them. You can get banana trails similar to the MK64 ones, and these are probably the most overpowered weapon to have in first place. There's only 3 bananas (MK64 had a trail of 5), but they appear very often (about a 1 in 3 chance for me). They can block 3 shells (one banana per shell), and even when you lose them (e.g from a blue shell or Pow! block), they still get dropped in a triangle formation. They act as great offense/defense.

Wii motes suck. I use GC controllers when ever allowed. Granted Wii motes rule for Wii sports, they suck overall for common games. But on the other hand its very funny to see an idiot spazzing over when playing wii boxing, especially if is your usual fat gamer. The classic remote is not a compromise at all... As for the driving wheel and accessories for Wii, i think they are ridiculous, maybe ill get the driving wheel just for fun if i get bored with the GC controller...it seems like an awful waste of money. Im not sure if the wheel comes with the game or if its thge one i see in the sport accessory pack with the tennis racket and baseball bat ..etc.

Also, on a personal note i stated that i would quite GW, i did, but im still going to go on these forums .

It comes with the game, so you might as well try it out. I did, playing a whole cup and coming 6th overall in 50cc. Needless to say, I went back to the GC controller.

I'm picking mine up on the 24th.

Australian release date is actually a couple of days ahead of the US for once...

Still waiting for Brawl though. It's been pushed back to July. BIG WTF!

There better be new content or something! /fistshake

I've nearly unlocked everything now, and over my playtime, have noticed some ways to get ahead of the curve, so to speak. If you have any others, feel free to add them...

-In MKWii, when choosing a Kart/Bike, the best things to look out for are high drifting, boosters, speed, and to a lesser extent, acceleration and weight. The vehicles that let you cut corners with perfect precision and with speed will nearly always win.

-Bikes are superior in nearly every way to Karts. Bikes are faster (with wheelies), can drift properly, and are less susceptible to obstacles due to their narrowness. The extra drift of Karts is worthless, as there are only a few corners in the game that let you drift long enough for it to charge. Bikes with high boosters will have nearly the same boosting speed with blue flames as Karts with orange flames.

-Learn to cancel-wheelie. Wheelies normally last for 3 seconds, but you can use them on smaller stretches, cancelling the wheelie by pressing the drift button.

-If you are slightly ahead of someone and they are trying to sneak past you at the finish line, don't go straight ahead. With bikes which are lighter, you can bump into the front of them and this'll push you forward repeatedly whilst knocking them back. If they try and use a mushroom, they'll push you forwards too.

-Be a trickmaster. Every time you get a bit of air, after the smallest bump, press the trick button and you should be rewarded by a trick and a big boost. Bumpy tracks can be boosted the whole time.

-Possibly the best 3 vehicles in the game are the small Torpedo Bike, the medium old-fashioned Kart (can't remember name), and the large Bowser bike. The Torpedo's my favorite at the moment, as it gives the best drift in the game, a decent speed and very powerful boosting, allowing me to complete lots of the game. Be careful not to go offroad with it as it does poorly then. the old-fashioned kart has higher-than-average everything except average speed. Use it if people don't let you use a bike (because they're too powerful). The Bowser bike is similar to the Torpedo bike except it has much lower acceleration, higher speed and is much heavier. It's good for heavy characters.
